The Unofficial Green Lantern

illumipel:

In light of a certain *a-hem* now deleted post, I felt the need to comment on the sheer complexity that is the unsung character arc of Aya, the Interceptor’s A.I. navigational computer. Because I adore her and have no plans on sleeping tonight oh god why did we have to pick the 7:30AM flight?

What is the Measure of a Non-Human? (Or Green Lantern in this case)

Aya is presented to us as a constantly evolving Artificial Intelligence: she questions things [Asking Razer about his Death Wish], presents viewpoints of her own [Various suggestions to the crew or dismissals of other’s views/wishes (Razer wanted to stay in jail remember?], learns from the examples shown from the Interceptor’s crew [“It is what Green Lantern’s do, correct?” She directly mimics Hal in “Invasion,” a fact which Kilowog calls Hal out on when he complains]

“But she’s just a Robot” we hear cried out in protest.

And Mogo’s a planet.  The line between an Intelligent Being with Free Will and something that has only Programed Responses it horrendously blurred to begin with in fiction.  A robot girl, who by the third episode shows direct and blatant concern for the people who use her Ship, only serves to do so further.  I’m assuming most of us have watched or know of Transformers, do you want to say those characters didn’t feel emotions? Didn’t have the ability to think on their own?

I’m willing to bet none of you said yes.

We have a grand total of two episodes, TWO, that bring up the philosophical argument of Aya not being a Green Lantern.  And it’s only the last few minutes in one and the prologue of the following before it’s dropped entirely.   Kilowog, when Aya responds to Hal’s complaints of reckless behavior by claiming she was only following GL protocol, complains she is not a GL, just a nav com, and when pressed for further explanation Kilowog is only able to provide a simple “needs a body and a ring” in protest.

Something which she readily supplies.

Form is of little consequence.

“I’ll get the compu- Aya, I’ll get her”

The crew stops thinking of her as a Nav Com very quickly.  Episode seven, only 3 episodes in after she starts using a humanoid form, Kilowog’s already forgotten that she can reduce her form to that of smaller robots.  They all treat her form’s mauling at that hands of Atrocitus to be something horrendous, when she’s back on her feet two episodes later with new limbs.  Because technically she could replace them at any time she wished to.

Drusa was deleting her higher functions to bring her back down to a Nav Com, implying she’d evolved past her original form and protocols.  And she wasn’t even hacking the ship, she was hacking the robotic form.  Meaning that Aya’s not only grown past her original purpose, but her original body.

Aya said it herself that the Interceptor could be considered where she was born, not a part of herself. A child from the womb as it were.

The Ring.

Is redundant, she’s living Green Energy.  She’s practically a living Green Lantern Ring.  No one questions the Orange Light constructions that are considered characters in the New Guardians do they?  No. So there’s no need to question Aya.

“Soulless Automaton”

That’s… a bit more complicated.  The argument of a soul is something that’s debated with humans in real life, I can’t properly supply a heavy set of logic to this in fiction…

And… I think I’ll leave it here for tonight, I’ve got an early flight to catch in a few hours.

Your commentary on the "Conner's Suicidal Thoughts" post is GOLD.

Seriously though, has anyone else noticed how alone he seems? I think this is the reason why I loved his and Blue Beetle’s interactions in “Salvage” so much, because they’re both essentially “outcasts” of the Team for different reasons, but they both find a little friendship and understanding in each other in that episode, so they’re both not completely on the sideline anymore. Conner would now understand that when it seems like Jaime is talking to himself, he’s actually talking to the scarab, and I imagine that Jaime would kind of understand Conner abrasive and more silent type attitude and communication.

an|ime|goil: about Conner's semi-suicidal comment

shadesninde:

animegoil:

So, something I forgot to mention for “Salvage”, when Jaime’s translating for the Appallaxian (sp?) and it says “All this noise, all this life, this pain. We sense the power in this place, power enough to destroy us, to end this pain, to be still again.” Conner’s response is “I can relate.”

I was…

I legit cried out of surprise and confusion and empathy when he said that.  I feel that this show has a way of alluding to very real issues by covering them indirectly - Roy’s “hunt for Speedy” as a way to address his heroin addiction, the obvious undertones of domestic violence in “Beneath,” the trans issues that parallel M’gann’s White Martian identity crisis, etc.

I doubt Greg will have a chance to show us what Conner really meant by that comment, but I definitely get the feeling that while Conner is much more balanced in season 2 than he was in season 1, he’s also much unhappier.  I would imagine that having two of his closest companions (M’gann and Kaldur) completely compromise their original values and characterizations could make him feel like nothing good in life is really certain, and that could lead to a sense of despair or hopelessness.

Shade’s last point especially. One of the things that I’ve noticed about this season is that Conner is really /alone/ in it. The two people he was originally closest with (M’gann and Kaldur) have seemingly gone against their core values, and the other members of his original team, of whom he would have a more solid connection with, are all unavailable to him in some way (whether it’s Nightwing trying to run the whole team, KF and Artemis having quit the team, or Zatanna in the Justice League now). Also, I’ll mention that he’s close with Clark, but Clark has Justice League duties and is also currently off-world.

Also, not to mention - contrary to everyone else, Conner doesn’t age - so he’s always stuck sort of “out of time” with everyone else, whether it be his teammates or people he went to school with (Mal and Karen - I imagine that he may have some sort of acquaintance with the both of them - but nowhere near the connection he had to the others on the original team). And also, because he’s seemingly intimidating and unwelcoming towards others, he isn’t really able to connect with any of the newer members of the Team (the closest we’ve seen him with someone in this season is with Gar - who due to their mutual connection with M’gann, is basically his younger brother - and Jaime, who is considered strange by everyone else on the team himself).

I don’t want to bring it down to his relationship iwth M’gann, but seriously, being with M’gann helped him to open up to the others a lot more and accept people in, and now that they’re broken up, he seems really unsure of how he’s supposed to communicate and associate with others, just like he was at the beginning of season one.

So essentially, in the second season, Conner is alone

sunny with a chance of madness: Stupid. Robot.

allthingsnerdy99:

I honestly don’t get the premise of Razor/Aya pairing in Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Its like pairing up Superboy and Sphere in Young Justice. Pointless and weird.

She is a robot, and last I checked… ROBOTS AREN’T SUPPOSED TO HAVE FEELINGS. In order for a robot to…

I’m gonna try to be humorous about this.

  • Robots aren’t supposed to have feelings: Well, I’m pretty sure rings aren’t supposed to make you magical girls people that fight with feelings but what can we do? These fictional things with their unrealistic scenarios. They give me a headache I tell you. HOW DARE THEY.
  • For all we know Aya could be a robot that was programmed to develop feelings. Probably by Ganthet. Did you see that shifty smirk when he showed Hal the Interceptor? He’s up to something, I’m sure. Probably all part of his EVIL plan to make all robots have feelings so they can annoy people who don’t like robots having feelings.
  • Hal has never been wrong about anything. Ever.
  • Aya saved the lives of every member of the crew at least once. So without her our protagonists would be dead by episode 3. And Razer would be a red splat of angry zebra bunny right now. Useless, I’m telling you. USELESS
  • Not sure how to tackle the pairing thing other than you contradict yourself in the same paragraph. Razer is evil… but he felt like shit for killing innocents, saved the team more than once, felt bad for putting them at risk and only went red lantern because Atrocitus manipulated him. EVIL I’M TELLING YOU.
  • Shippers gonna ship.

I get not shipping Razer/Aya because hey, not everybody ships the same. Not liking Aya? Sure, why not? But at least make an effort.

That said, what really bugs me about this?

Appa Ali Apsa, when did you get a tumblr?

ROBOTS AREN’T SUPPOSED TO HAVE FEELINGS

um

one:

you do know there are entire genres, entire libraries of books about robots and the development of feelings, personalities, whether they can have souls, etc. it’s like, a very popular and well-talked fiction and sci-fi subject. whether robots in rl could have feelings we can argue, but this is fiction and in fiction whatever you want can happen, and if you want robots with feelings, you get robots with feelings.

TWO:

THERE ARE ROBOT GLS. THIS HAS HAPPEND IN GREEN LANTERN CANON BEFORE. THERE IS A GREEN LANTERN MATH EQUATION. THERE IS A GREEN LANTERN BOX. AYA CAN BE A GREEN LANTERN. THIS ISN’T A RIDICULOUS NOTION IN GREEN LANTERN CANON. ALSO: THERE IS A GREEN LANTERN MATH EQUATION

THREE:

ALSO THIS ROBOT KICKED FUCKING ASS. THE ENTIRE TEAM WOULD’VE BEEN DEAD WITHOUT HER MULTIPLE TIMES. WHO DO YOU THINK PUSHED RAZER OUT OF THAT TORTURE DEVICE? WHO SAVED THEM FROM THAT WORMHOLE? THEY WOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN PAST THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON ALIVE WITHOUT AYA. DID YOU JUST BLANK OUT ON THOSE ENTIRE EPISODES?

FOUR:

if you don’t like a pairing, that is fine! that is totally cool. if you’re squicked out by robot/organic pairings, that is fine. but do not imply the pairing is wrong because aya is useless or ~doesn’t deserve razer~ or any of that immature overdone fanwank character and female hate bull.

Putting my two cents in here.

Aya is an artificial intelligence.

A.I.s are pretty much designed to learn and adapt to situations and changes.

Travelling with the Green Lanterns and Razer, she has learnt from them how organic beings work, emotions, morals etc (her quoting Hal about what a Green Lantern does, anybody?)

You can see the development throughout the season as she is learning this.

But it’s totally possible for her to feel emotions.
